Dear reader, life is too short for crap books.

If You Like...

Public librarians do a little thing that we in the biz like to call 'readers' advisory,' which often takes the form of recommended reading lists that are sometimes called 'readalikes.'

I know. Librarian lingo is goofy. Bear with me.

Anyhow, I'm a big fan of these lists, but have always been a little disappointed when I can't find 'readalikes' for anything less predictable than Stephen King or The Da Vinci Code.

I read everything. I love recommending books to my friends. I love having books recommended to me. My hero is Nancy Pearl, rock star librarian, readers' advisory queen, and the author of these fine books .

Hence, this blog.

Can you make a list for "hipsters stuck in weird rural areas full of religious nuts and with no bookstores available"?

Off the top of my head, I'd recommend Veronica by Mary Gaitskill and the Saul and Patsy short stories in Charles Baxter collections (i.e. "Saul and Patsy Are Getting Comfortable in Michigan"). Also the Michigan punk rock kids, Chloe and Oscar, in The Feast of Love (also Charles Baxter) are absolutely heartbreaking and awesome.

I'll see if I can think of anything else.
